Karen Walker is the latest in the long string of designers to collaborate with the Walt Disney Co. and create an exclusive, Mickey Mouse-inspired collection of T-shirts, sweatshirts, eyewear, jewelry, accessories and homeware, which hits stores today.
The Disney x Karen Walker collection, which will be available globally, features pieces that embrace the spirit of both Mickey, who is celebrating his 90th birthday this year, and Walker.
“When Disney approached us to help celebrate Mickey’s 90th, it was an immediate and unequivocal yes,” Walker said. “Mickey is a true icon and it’s a great honor for me to have an opportunity to interpret his personality, which I’ve always loved, through my own lens.”
The Disney x Karen Walker collection includes sweatshirts and T-shirts featuring Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald toting sacks. The color palette includes muted pink, cerise, yellow with polka dots, alongside classic gray marle, black and white.
As reported, Mickey’s milestone is being celebrated around the world with events, exhibits, activations and merchandise, from companies such as Forever 21 and Vault by Vans. Marc Jacobs has launched a Mickey-inspired collection, as has Opening Ceremony and Target Corp. Terez, Lacoste, Rag & Bone, Legos, Sugarfina and Ample Hill Creamery are among the other brands paying homage to Mickey, leading up to the official birthday on Nov. 18.
Eyewear for the collection comes in four Mickey- and Minnie Mouse-inspired styles, including a metal-trimmed, polka-dot bow lens in sheer soft pink or black, acetate and metal frames that incorporate mouse ears and hands, and colored acetates trimmed with cartoon Minnie eyelashes. Each pair is finished with the signature Karen Walker arrow temple.
There’s also fine jewelry in sterling silver and 9-carat yellow and rose gold of Mickey as an outline pendant and marching within a small disc. There are Mickey and Minnie mugs, key rings, dusty pink totes, enamel badges and a pink purse and backpack.
Retail prices range from $23 for the commemorative plates to $1,535 for the gold and rose gold runaway Mickey disc necklaces. Sunglasses are $200 a pair. Sweatshirts range from $145 to $170, while T-shirts are $85 to $95.
The collection will be a very limited-edition release. It will be available from Wednesday in all Karen Walker stores in New Zealand and Japan, karenwalker.com, and select stores including David Jones, Harvey Nichols, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Moda Operandi, Smith & Caughey’s and Ballantynes.
A Disney pop-up store will also open a Playpark by Karen Walker in Auckland on Wednesday, with the full Disney x Karen Walker collection, as well as a curation of other special 90th birthday collaborative collections, ranging from footwear, hats and watches to stationery, oven mitts and egg cups.
The Playpark experience and pop-up store are inspired by Walker’s own visits to Disneyland as a child, and she’s been back several times with her own daughter. “I love the full Disney experience you get when you visit the parks and I wanted to give a little bit of that magic in my own store this Christmas,” Walker said.
