The New York City Economic Development Corporation and Parsons The New School for Design has kicked off Fashion Draft NYC, a networking opportunity meant to attract young talent to the fashion industry.
The effort is one of six initiatives spearheaded by the city to try to enhance long-term growth of New York’s $55 billion fashion industry. Through Fashion Draft NYC, business-minded students from around the globe will visit the city to brainstorm and interview with fashion executives. The end result could potentially be a full-time, management-track job with one of the participating New York-based companies.
Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Gilt Groupe, and LF USA were among the first in line to sign up and additional ones are expected to get on board in the coming weeks and months.
Geared toward graduating seniors in college who have related educational or internship experience, the event will be staged Feb. 16 to 18. About 25 finalists are expected to attend the three-day program, and their travel expenses, accommodations, and meals will be covered. Aside from interviewing with potential employers, students will get behind-the-scenes tours at companies. They will also listen to a yet-to-be-named fashion industry leader and attend a networking dinner.
Students must apply at fashiondraftnyc.com by Nov. 3. Semi-finalists will be chosen in mid-December.
Fashion Draft NYC is the second of the City’s fashion initiatives, including Fashion Campus NYC, in which NYCEDC has also partnered with Parsons.
Executive Dean of Parsons Joel Towers said, “Parsons shares the mayor’s commitment to this important industry, and we want to do everything we can to help ensure that our students, many of whom will be leaders within the industry, will continue to see New York City as an ideal place to build their careers.”
“The fashion industry is a critical driver of our city’s economy, and programs such as Fashion Draft NYC will ensure that this industry continues to grow,” said New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth W. Pinsky. “By recruiting the best talent from around the globe, we will add to the already stellar roster of fashion professionals working here in the City, and further establish New York as the fashion capital of the world.”
