Off the runways at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, street style took on a life of its own. Held Feb. 19 to 23 in the sprawling IFEMA fairgrounds north of the city, the five-day event brought out a more adventurous crowd than usual. Women turned up in all kinds of fake and cuddly fur, but summery looks, including cropped pants, bare midriffs and sandals, made an appearance, too. Also on view: loads of leather separates and bombers with accessories ranging from tinted sunglasses, knee-highs socks and the emergence of a popular hairstyle: braids. Men also took a more daring approach — dresses over pants, for example — as well as snappy outerwear and distressed denim. Many attendees finished off their looks with huge statement scarves and hats.
