What better showcase for youthful style trends than the streets around New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and The New School’s Parsons School of Design as the fall semester got underway? With temperatures topping 90 degrees, many opted for the shortest of shorts, playful rompers or miniskirts that did a visual balancing act with ankle-grazing skirts and sundresses. And yet, with all the edgy and inventive looks, there was also a significant show of long, classic shirts on fashion’s front line, worn solo as minidresses or tunics in denim and floral prints. Overalls, both short and long, were popular with all genders — while a few costumelike getups garnered attention for the artiest types.
