Bionic creates yarn from up-cycled plastic found in coastal communities and marine environments.

Raw material engineering company Bionic, creator of Bionic Yarn, in partnership with Fashion Positive, has been awarded a Cradle to Cradle certification at the Bronze Level for its HLX and DPX yarn structures.

Bionic HLX and DPX are the first yarns containing recycled plastic that have been certified by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. The refined texture of HLX yarns and the versatility of DPX yarns enable product designers and brands to achieve environmental impact, performance and quality in both industrial and consumer applications, Fashion Positive said.

Powered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, the Fashion Positive initiative was created to innovate and optimize the materials and production of apparel products. Fashion Positive acts as a partner helping to create and fund progress for designers, suppliers and manufacturers to make products in fundamentally better ways.

From its inception, Bionic has been a company founded on creating the most durable textiles made from recycled plastic, with the ultimate goal of helping the environment.

“We pride ourselves on the environmental impact and accomplishments Bionic has achieved over the years, however when William McDonough challenged us to push our vision to the limit, we knew it was time to take it to the next level,” said Tim Coombs, cofounder of Bionic.

The environmental Cradle to Cradle design philosophy was published by William McDonough and Michael Braungart in 2002 and has since been transformed into a framework for quality assessment and innovation: the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program.

Bionic Yarn specializes in creating high-performance yarn and fabric out of recycled plastic. Since 2013, Bionic has been heavily engaged in the recovery and up-cycling of plastic from coastal communities and marine environments around the world.

The company said achieving a Cradle to Cradle certification was paramount to that goal. The certification process involves an onsite evaluation of factory social and environmental compliance standards, use of renewable energy in manufacturing processes, material health, material reutilization and water stewardship.

To achieve the Bronze Level certification, a stringent protocol must be met. This includes that at least 75 percent of materials by weight have been assessed, the product’s homogeneous materials cannot contain banned-list chemicals above permitted thresholds and products or materials must be designed to be recycled or biodegradable. In addition, a facility-wide water audit must be completed, a renewable energy use and carbon management strategy need be in place, and a full social responsibility self-audit has to have been completed and a positive impact strategy developed, if needed.
