When it comes to the e-commerce sales of U.S. retailers, Amazon Inc. dominates the list of the top 50 companies — and is followed by Apple Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Macy’s Inc.
According to data from eMarketer for the trailing 12-month period, Amazon took the number-one spot with $94.7 billion in online sales, which represents 70 percent of the company’s total revenue. The company experienced online sales growth of 19.4 percent compared to the prior year’s period. E-commerce sales at Apple swelled a whopping 40 percent year-over-year to $16.8 billion — even as total revenue decelerated over 7 percent. For Apple, e-commerce sales represent 7.7 percent of total revenue.
Companies in the ranking include online firms, department stores, discounters, specialty apparel brands, fashion brands and accessories companies.
Wal-Mart’s online sales as a percentage of total revenue held steady at 3 percent. But online sales growth rose nearly 9 percent to $14.4 billion for the trailing 12-month period. And despite a 4.8 percent drop in total revenue, Macy’s online sales for the period gained 12.5 percent to $4.6 billion. Online sales at the department store represent 17.9 percent of total revenue.

When ranked by e-commerce sales growth for the period, Hudson’s Bay Co. took the number-one spot with online sales increasing 76 percent to $1.5 billion. It was followed by Ulta Beauty with growth of 56 percent to $345 million, and Michael Kors with a 55.7 percent gain to $179.1 million. Nike saw its online sales rocket 54 percent in the trailing 12 months to $2.2 billion while Ascena Retail Group rose 50 percent to $1.3 billion.
When ranked by e-commerce as a percent of revenue, non-pure play e-tailers with percentages over 20 percent include many firms that are experiencing hiccups in the current market: J. Crew at 38 percent; Urban Outfitters Inc. at 35 percent; Neiman Marcus at 30.1 percent, and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. at 25 percent. Antony Karabus, chief executive officer of HRC Advisors, attributes this to the impact of variable costs of e-commerce, which is dragging down profits by over 20 percent as well as impacting the top line.

What’s also notable about the list of the top 50 retailers ranked by e-commerce sales is that the total online sales of Amazon outweigh the 49 other retailers combined ($88.3 billion to Amazon’s $94.7 billion). The average e-commerce growth of all 50 companies was 16.1 percent, which mirrors overall online sales growth in 2016.
