FASHION STOCKS EVADE DROP IN MARKET
NEW YORK — The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 100.14 points to 8712.87 Friday, but most fashion stocks were not seriously affected.
Friday’s drop capped off a turbulent week: The Dow dove 207 points on Monday and rebounded 164 points on Wednesday. Overall, the Dow lost 122 points, or about 1.4 percent, last week, as investors focused on the struggling Japanese and other Asian economies.
Fashion stocks were mostly mixed in Friday’s trading.
Notable declines hit the Gap, off 1 3/16 to 58 3/4, and Dayton Hudson Corp., down 1 3/16 to 47 15/16, but Dress Barn gained 1 1/8 to 28 1/2, and Neiman Marcus Group added 7/8 to 36 7/8.
Among manufacturers, Jones Apparel Group gave back 15/16 to 64 5/8, Estee Lauder Cos. slid 7/8 to 62 3/4 and Guess lost 5/16 to 4 9/16, but among the gainers were Warnaco Group, up 7/8 to 40 5/8; Fruit of the Loom, 3/4 to 32 13/16, and Revlon Inc., 9/16 to 48 1/4.
