Barneys New York’s downtown store has steered clear of selling men’s suits since it opened over the winter — the men’s department is too small.
But that’s about to change.
This week, P. Johnson Tailors, an Australian tailored clothing brand with branches in New York and London, will be added to the mix at the retailer’s Chelsea unit.
Patrick Johnson, the designer of P. Johnson, studied at Central Saint Martins in London and started the brand nine years ago. Its distinguishing factor is that it is simple and lightweight with a focus on merino wool.
Barneys will offer Johnson’s ready-to-wear as well as made-to-measure and will have a full-time employee on site to help customers experience the brand. Some of the pieces will be exclusive to Barneys and will be part of the company’s XO (Exclusively Ours) offering for fall.
The line will also be available online at Barneys.com.
Tom Kalenderian, executive vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s wear for Barneys, said: “Immediately after being introduced to the P. Johnson concept, we agreed that something very special was happening here. It is fascinating to see such a ceremonial and traditional concept such as customized clothing, be embraced so strongly by younger men. After meeting Patrick Johnson, and having the opportunity to absorb his vision for his brand, this galvanized our interest in building something together for Barneys New York. We decided to begin our collaboration in the new downtown location of Barneys New York and on Barneys.com for ready to wear. The downtown mix of designer brands and clients who are avid fashion aficionados made it apparent that what we were missing would be satisfied by P. Johnson downtown.”
Barneys will celebrate the partnership with a cocktail party at the store on Thursday night.
