BASCO’S BACK: Barneys New York Inc. will relaunch its former private brand, Basco, for fall. The collection of men’s sportswear will be previewed on Aug. 14 and will hit stores shortly afterward. Basco, which is an acronym for Barneys American Sportswear Company, was a thriving private label for the retailer in the Eighties and early Nineties. Basco was started in about 1980 by Barneys then-co-chief executive officer Gene Pressman and brought European runway looks to the U.S. market at more accessible price points. The label, which had also been wholesaled to better retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue and Wilkes Bashford, began to flounder in the mid-Nineties and in 1996, Barneys gave up day-to-day operation of the label.
