After two years of trying and failing to establish itself in the market, Cargo, the men’s shopping magazine, is shutting down. Conde Nast editorial director Thomas Wallace broke the news to the staff in a meeting Monday afternoon, said sources at the title. (Conde Nast also owns WWD.)
Cargo was started at a moment when the success of Lucky made several publishers feel there might be promise in the idea of a similar men’s publication. But two of those magazines, Ziff Davis’ Sync and Fairchild Publications’ Vitals, have already folded, and Cargo struggled to attract both readers and advertisers. In the second half of 2005, it sold an average of 73,909 copies per issue on the newsstand.
