Denim has always been a mainstay for hordes of Coachella attendees, from the ubiquitous cutoff shorts to high-waisted throwback-style jeans and classic jackets. Capitalizing on its true blue heritage, Levi’s made its presence known at this year’s festival with a Saturday afternoon pool party that took over half of the grounds at the Avalon hotel. (The brand also sponsored that night’s Neon Carnival along with its one-off vintage division Re/Done.) Celebrities including Jamie Chung, Camilla Belle, Freida Pinto and Kiernan Shipka enjoyed freshly grilled steak tacos, a pool party, tunes spun by Hannah Bronfman and the party’s highlight reserved for VIPs: customized Levi’s 501 and 505 jeans, shorts and jackets.
The whole affair was hosted by Suki Waterhouse, who, despite a late night on Friday, was raring to go at noon sharp on Saturday. “An orange juice or some water?” she asked a waiter as she took a seat in the shade. “Hungover.com. Has anyone got a cigarette?” To the model and fledgling actress’ credit, her genetic gifts rendered any signs of fatigue invisible. She even sported tiny gold star sequins under her eyes, courtesy of makeup artist Sarah Tanno, who also tends to Lady Gaga.
“It’s awesome,” she said of her hosting gig. “I got a very special opportunity to have the tailors and designers and the chief product [officer] of Levi’s actually have shorts fitted, so I am getting the dream pair of shorts made, and I’m getting them for my sisters as well. You don’t get to do that often.”
Waterhouse went on discuss her favorite part of Coachella: “The palm trees that are all like lit up at the festival….I love looking up at those when you are walking around with your friends. It’s a nice change from being in England in the rain and mud,” she said, referring to the Glastonbury music festival, which she says is her favorite.
Although she splits her time between London and Los Angeles for both modeling and acting — she just wrapped “Billionaire Boys Club” starring Kevin Spacey, Ansel Elgort and Emma Roberts — it’s the latter that will keep her in California for the near term. “I’m about to start an indie movie, but I don’t know how much I can say about it.”
