BECKHAM TO SCORE DEAL?: Could David Beckham be ready to reveal a deal with Global Brands Group for men’s casual sportswear?
Global Brands vice chairman and chief executive officer Bruce Rockowitz has scheduled a press conference in Hong Kong Wednesday at the Ritz-Carlton ballroom and “will be joined by a special guest,” according to the invitation. Sources believe that special guest could be Beckham who, as reported in April, has been in ongoing talks with Global Brands about a men’s wear line. Officials at Global Brands, which spun off from Li & Fung earlier this year, couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday.
A spokesman for Simon Fuller, chief executive officer of XIX Entertainment in London, who formed a venture partnership with Beckham and serves as his adviser, was travelling to Asia on Tuesday, according to his out-of-office message, and couldn’t be reached for comment. Fuller is responsible for masterminding Victoria and David Beckham’s fashion and commercial activities.
Beckham has been raising his fashion profile with several collaborations, including a swimwear and bodywear deal with H&M, a men’s fragrance partnership with Coty Inc. and apparel with Adidas. He has also been the face of Belstaff’s 2014 global ad campaign and launched a special Beckham for Belstaff Collection that the former soccer player designed.
Sources said the soccer star, who retired last year, is eager to build a David Beckham lifestyle brand and have people wear products bearing his own label.
