LONDON — European stock markets were down in midmorning trading on Thursday.
The CAC 40 in Paris slid 1.4 percent to 4,499.04, followed by the FTSE 100 in London, 1.3 percent to 6,239.31, and the DAX in Frankfurt, 1.2 percent to 10,175.86. The FTSE MIB fell 1 percent to 18,573.31.
The euro traded at $1.13, while the pound fetched $1.45 and the Swiss franc equaled $1.02 at 10:30 a.m. CET. The Swedish krona was at $0.12.
Retail and luxury stocks were mostly down, with the morning’s biggest fallers including Inditex, 3.2 percent to 28.34 euros; Hennes & Mauritz, 2.4 percent to 286 Swedish kronor, and Marks & Spencer, 1.7 percent to 4.30 pounds.
Among the few stocks to have gained ground were Hermès International, 1.5 percent to 312.10 euros after the company reported sales rose 6 percent in the first quarter. Koovs was up 1 percent to 0.27 pounds, and Zalando, 0.4 percent to 29.10 euros.
