PARIS — Funeral services for Sonia Rykiel, who died last week at 86, are scheduled for Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Montparnasse Cemetery.
Montparnasse Cemetery is the final resting place for many intellectuals, artists, publishers and others who promoted the works of authors and artists.
Synonymous with sweaters and insouciant, Left Bank chic, Rykiel featured books in the windows of her boutiques since she launched her business in the late Sixties.
Elected Queen of Knitwear by WWD, the designer popularized striped and slogan sweaters and was beloved for her seductive personality and flamboyant style, her frizzy triangle of red hair as iconic as the white ponytail of her great friend Karl Lagerfeld.
Rykiel’s peers considered her one of the major fashion figures and innovators of the 20th century.
