HIGH FIVE: Wallpaper is marking the fifth anniversary of its annual Handmade issue with five covers featuring the handprints of famous designers. Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic, Amanda Levete, Barber Osgerby and Paul Smith have all literally lent a hand to the August issue.
Handmade is an annual, traveling exhibition unveiled by Wallpaper at the Salone del Mobile in Milan each spring. It showcases the fruits of collaborations between artists, designers, brands and manufacturers, and over the past five years 562 collaborators from 48 countries have produced 361 products.
Every year, Wallpaper’s August issue documents the details of the design and production of the collaborations, which have ranged from furnishings and fittings to fashion and food. The five designers whose hands are on the August covers have all contributed to various Handmade projects in the past. In 2010, Smith created a braille wallpaper that allowed the visually impaired to read the words “pink roses” across a flower-patterned wallpaper, while the following year he worked with Rapha on the cycling kit for Wallpaper’s Handmade bike ride through Milan.
