Hot Topic has partnered with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to launch a limited-edition collection inspired by DC Comics bombshells.
Young women can now dress up as their favorite gals with super powers. The Wonder Woman outfit consists of a red short-sleeve top tied at the waist, priced at $39.50, and matching blue shorts for $34.50. The only thing that’s missing is the metal headband worn by Lynda Carter, the iconic Wonder Woman, who starred as the female superhero from 1975 to 1979 in a TV series.
In the DC Comics story, “Injustice: Gods Among Us,” Batwoman is ripped. Her arms are bound in strips of leather, she has spikes on her chest and generally looks like an she’s wearing an S&M version of her costume. Hot Topic’s Batwoman dress, $59.50, has only a hint of bad with red bat wings on a black dress. A coordinating cape is $19.50.
Harley Quinn, the Joker’s sometimes sidekick, is a rebel who wears her blue- and pink-tinged hair in two high pony tails, a modified moto jacket and short-shorts. Hot Topic’s version of the jacket, $74.50, says “Joker’s Wild” with an image of the demented clown.
Poison Ivy, perhaps DC Comics’ most highly realized female character, is also its most highly educated. Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley, Ph.D, Sc.D, has a colossal climbing vine of a chip on her shoulder. Infamously played by Uma Thurman in the 1997 film “Batman & Robin,” Ivy joins up with villain Dr. Freeze. Hot Topic’s Poison Ivy Dress, $69.50, is Amazon green with a dizzying pattern of black bats and leaves that gives insight into the character’s troubled mind.
Hot Topic got the idea for the collection after seeing comic book covers during a meeting with DC Comics executives. The retailer thought the heroines looked both fashionable and empowering. The trick was making garments that wouldn’t look too costume-y.
“Our DC Comics Bombshells collection speaks to not only DC fangirls, but our Hot Topic fashion customer as well,” says Cindy Levitt, senior vice president of merchandising and marketing at Hot topic. “Just about everyone wants to be a superhero or bombshell deep down inside!”
