SAN FRANCISCO — Instagram and fashion have always gotten along. The fashion community was one of the first to truly embrace the photo- and video-sharing service, so during this year’s New York Fashion Week, Instagram is launching a new feature to highlight that relationship.
Starting Friday, Instagram will introduce a special section called “The Best of Fashion Week Updated Daily By @Instagram.” Users will be able to click on the top portion of Instagram’s Explore page (Search & Explore launched in June with collections at the top of the page) to see some of the most creative content coming out of #NYFW.
This is the first time that Instagram will provide a space for users to see daily updated, curated content from a specific event, although the company has done previous collections from events like the Video Music Awards, Comic Con, Pride and more.
The same team who regularly culls through the 70 million daily Instagram posts to feature unique accounts will work on this new project, and it won’t be based purely on hashtags or number of likes, but rather the best content from the shows, behind the scenes, in addition to street style and after parties. Past blogs have featured photos and accounts featuring Paris Couture Week, Giambattista Valli and highlights from backstage at New York Fashion Week, among others.
According to Instagram, during fashion month in February and March in 2015, the service counted more than 140 million likes and comments on fashion-week related photos, and 25 million people engaged with fashion week-related content. But, sorry London, Paris, Milan — the new feature is only open to the U.S. for now. For a first look, Instagram will be launching a collection of up-and-coming fashion accounts on Wednesday and Thursday, but the new fashion week collection will begin on Friday.
