CURATORIAL EYE: Isabelle Huppert is set to curate an exhibit on Robert Mapplethorpe’s works. The exhibit will be presented by Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac at the Paris Photo fair, which runs from Nov. 12 to 16 in the Grand Palais.
The New York-based Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation has given Huppert free access to its inventory.
“I look at each Robert Mapplethorpe photo as if I were reading a poem,” Huppert said. “In the ones I have chosen, his way of seeing the world is pent with softness — and silence […] In each one of them there is a perfection of form, the delicacy and mystery of light and shade.”
The actress and muse — she has been lensed by photographers including Robert Doisneau, Helmut Newton and Jürgen Teller — joins a list of artists including Cindy Sherman, David Hockney, Bob Wilson and Sophia Coppola who took part of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac’s project of a series of exhibitions dedicated to Mapplethorpe, in which they shared an intimate vision of Mapplethorpe’s multifaceted work.
