LIGHTS OUT: As part of Metro International S.A.’s consolidation strategy, its ModMods site will go dark at the end of this month. The international newspaper group will close its main offices in Stockholm and London to relocate those functions to Latin America.
Launched in November, ModMods was created by editor in chief Kenya Hunt and publisher Maggie Samways. The digital focus on fashion, street style and beauty was an offshoot of the free daily’s Style pages. ModMods’ introduction stemmed in part from the success of Metro International’s one-time collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld as a global guest editor.
The site uses GIF-building technology for street-style photography and a function that allows users to create an account, find friends, contribute their own looks and set their privacy settings. ModMods’ also hosts the “Style Hunt” video series, which is produced in collaboration with Pharrell Williams’ I Am OTHER channel. While Metro International does not own that property, the aim is to keep it with the site, according to a source.
