MILAN — Spanish fashion brand Mango has promoted Toni Ruiz as chief executive officer. He has been with the company since 2015, most recently as general manager. Before that, he was its chief financial officer, a position he took on in February 2018. Mango’s cfo now is Josep Barberà.
A University of Barcelona and IESE Business School graduate, Ruiz joined Mango from Leroy Merlin, part of the Adeo group, where he held the roles of financial officer for Spain and director of global planning and control.
Mango said the move is aimed at strengthening Ruiz’s leadership and to allow him to pursue the company’s transformation by enhancing its digital capabilities and services, improving online sales, logistics and operations, which have been under scrutiny since 2018.
“We’re really focused on this data-driven kind of organization, which is also culturally a different way of doing things. We have plans to change our organization because I think it’s the way to compete in the future,” Ruiz told WWD last November while inaugurating a new logistics plant in Lliçà D’Amunt, a 30-minute-ride from Barcelona.
In 2018, Mango reported revenues of 2.23 billion euros, with online sales accounting for 20 percent of the total, up from 15.5 percent in 2017. In 2019, the online business is expected to account for 23 percent of the company’s sales.
Under Ruiz’s lead, the company has strengthened its c-suite structure by last year appointing César de Vicente as global director of retail tasked with improving management and operations across markets and David Gutiérrez as global director of human resources to promote a change in the company’s culture in a digital and data-driven landscape.
Most recently, Ruiz has also enhanced the company’s sustainability efforts. Last month, Mango said it pledges to source 100 percent of its cotton from eco-friendly mills by 2025 and increase the use of recycled polyester to 50 percent by the same year.
The company’s board is chaired by Mango’s founder Isak Andic, who established the brand in 1984, and includes Carlos Costa, chief operating officer; Daniel López, vice chairman with responsibilities across wholesale expansion and franchises; Jonathan Andic, executive vice chairman supervising image and communication activities and the men’s line, and Antonio Pascual, head of the company’s supply chain, among others.
