Matthew A. Kaness has been named chief executive officer of ModCloth, effective Jan. 19. He will also join the board.
Kaness succeeds cofounder and ceo Eric Koger, who will stay with the company to help with the transition and key projects. Susan Koger, cofounder, will remain chief creative officer and will report to Kaness.
Most recently, Kaness was chief strategy officer of Urban Outfitters Inc.
The Kogers founded ModCloth in 2002 as a small dorm-room venture at Carnegie Mellon University. Today ModCloth is a leading online retailer of vintage-inspired clothing, accessories and decor from independent designers around the world. The company has more than 300 employees and shipped more than two million orders in 2014.
“We always knew the time would come when ModCloth would need the leadership of an experienced retail executive to take our well-loved brand into the future, expand our distribution and lead the continued evolution of the customer experience,” said Eric Koger.
“I admire how Susan and Eric have built a large and fast-growing business around a highly engaged and loyal community,” said Kaness, whose experience includes direct-to-consumer expansion, new concept development, international partnerships and supply chain optimization.
ModCloth, which is headquartered in San Francisco and has offices in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, is backed by Accel Partners, First Round Capital, Floodgate, StubHub founder Jeff Fluhr and Norwest Venture partners.
