AMERICAN GOTHIC: Michael Bastian has opened his first retail concept, a pop-up shop in collaboration with the BOFFO Building Fashion arts group that will be open every day through Nov. 21. The boutique, designed by Bittertang, is fashioned from two shipping containers situated within the SuperPier complex, which is at 15th Street and the Hudson River Park in New York. Channeling the Andrew Wyeth-tinged mood of Bastian’s fall collection, the shop incorporates New England Gothic elements. The interior is draped with a backlit canvas that’s been sheathed in 400 pounds of beeswax while a 20-foot mound of hay cascades around the doorway. “It feels a bit like ‘Sleep No More,’” said Bastian of the haunting décor, including two empty beds, that occupies the front of the shop. Merchandise is mostly relegated to the rear of the space. “We wanted to create an experience. Today, you really have to give people a reason to visit a store and not just shop online,” explained the designer.
