HONORABLE SILK: August Silk, a division of Pacific Silk & Clothing Co., has been named the 1994 recipient of the Fashion Leadership Award for its innovation in washable silk apparel.
The award, given by the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, will be presented Thursday in the San Francisco Fashion Center at the third annual award ceremony and fashion show. As part of the show, titled “The World Beat,” student designs will be modeled and judged. There will also be a segment featuring 20 August Silk outfits. May 19 is slated to be proclaimed August Silk Day in San Francisco.
Macy’s West is tying into the event with special activities this week, including informal modeling and a store appearance Saturday by Jack Weinstock, president of Pacific Silk. Macy’s will also present a $500 bond to an art student whose fashion illustrations are judged most stylish. In addition, winning student designs will be showcased in each of the August Silk departments — August Silk, August Silk Knitwear, August Silk Dresses and Silx by August Silk lingerie. Store windows will display award-winning students’ designs.
Previous Fashion Leadership awards went to James Galanos and Nicholas Graham of Joe Boxer.
