NIGHT CAP: Rosetta Getty was tired. She’d missed a night’s sleep, just having flown from L.A. to Berlin, where she was hosting a special and oh-so-secret pre-pre-opening dinner in the city’s most expansive new specialty emporium, The Store. While a succession of English breakfast tea, coffee and freshly pressed spinach juice didn’t quite do the trick, the designer’s eyes popped open upon a child’s tree-house bed set right inside The Store’s entrance.
“Alex [Eagle, The Store’s creative director] is already looking into how long it’ll take to ship home,” said the mother of three of the 2,000 euro, or $2,500, wooden hideaway by Belgian furniture maker Mathy by Bols.
Like the dinner guests — assorted Berlin and London opinion makers such as U.K. brand consultant Pippa Vosper, O32c founder and editor in chief Jörg Koch, Berlin designer duo Annelie Augustin and Odély Teboul of Augustin Teboul, and attorney, civic leader and the American ambassador’s wife, Kimberly Emerson — Getty was getting a first view of Berlin’s next big thing. Situated in Soho House’s main and lower levels, the 30,150-square-foot multipurpose space is a joint venture between The Vinyl Factory and Soho House. It will open to the public in March. Getty, whose collection will be carried exclusively by The Store in Berlin, didn’t quite know what to expect. “We don’t have the experience of a boutique at Soho House in L.A. or New York, but walking in, I’m not only impressed but inspired. The size, the concept of everything under one roof, the color palette, all the different colors, the mesh, the rope, the stone tables, industrial corrugation, these teddy-bear blanket chairs in mustard [and] even the air-conditioning ducts are amazing,” she said.
Eagle spent two years perfecting The Store’s concept and assembling its portfolio of fashion, beauty, design, magazines, books, furniture, music and art pieces. The mix also includes a library, a barber shop, a beauty/nail parlor, creative work spaces, a café and a bar. Still to come: a studio, screening room, club, accommodations and more.
