Quotient Technology Inc., a digital promotion and media platform for brands, retailers and consumers, named Washington D.C. as the most frugal city in the country, according to its Coupons.com Savings Index. The firm operates the Coupons.com web site and app.
The results were calculated by combining the total possible savings and transactions from Coupons.com U.S. properties (which includes the web site, app and thousands of publisher partners) from January 2016 to December 2016 for metropolitan areas with a population of 1.5 million or more.
The list of top 10 frugal cities in ascending order is Washington D.C.; Orlando, Fla.; Charlotte, N.C.; Raleigh, N.C.; Dallas; Tampa, Fla.; Nashville; Cleveland; Virginia Beach, Va., and Atlanta.

Now referred to as “America’s Coupon Capital,” Washington D.C. shoppers selected over 23 million digital coupons in 2016, totaling more than $31 million in savings. Coupons.com speculates that D.C. denizens may have tapered spending because of post-election stress or the slew of domestic and international events that transpired in 2016. This is the first time in seven years that Orlando, Fla., was pegged down to second place.
Jeanette Pavini, a Coupons.com consumer savings expert, said, “The Most Frugal Cities list from Coupons.com demonstrates America’s effort to stretch their dollar, especially when stress is high.” She added, “With savvy shoppers clipping more than $3.6 billion in possible savings last year, it’s clear to me that the harder people work to earn a living, the more they expect to get out of that money.”
