Algenist Heads Into Color Cosmetics Category With Reveal

Not many beauty brands trumpet the fact that their products are full of algae. But with the imminent launch of its first color cosmetics items, skin-care brand Algenist is more than willing to make the claim.

Reveal, rolling out Feb. 26, is a makeup line utilizing a multitude of microalgae-based species to color correct and improve skin’s tone and radiance, explained Frederic Stoeckel, who took over as general manager for Algenist as it was founded in 2011. Formulated with the proprietary AlgaCorrecting Complex, its formula uses naturally occurring red, blue, green and golden algae to camouflage skin imperfections, while also delivering antiaging skin-care benefits, he said.

“Microalgae are able to survive in harsh environments by harnessing energy from the sun and adapting by changing color,” said Stoeckel. “Biotechnology scientists discovered that these green, red, blue and golden algae can enhance makeup and skin-care products by visibly correcting skin-color imperfections, evening out skin tone, and boosting skin’s vitality and luminosity.” Red algae color corrects dullness,
green algae color corrects redness, blue algae color corrects sallowness
and golden algae color corrects darkness and discoloration, said Stoeckel.

Algenist is a brand born of biotechnology and renewable energy expertise by Solazyme Inc., the San Francisco-based biotech company. After 10 years of research by 100 scientists and engineers, more than 10,000 strains of microalgae studied led to the introduction of the first commercial aviation flight using microalgae-derived renewable jet fuel on United Airlines. Partnerships with the U.S. Navy, Maersk and Volkswagen followed.

He noted that microalgae’s value is powered by its ability to not only survive, but to thrive in harsh environments and extreme weather conditions. “Their existence under such conditions is due to their molecular structure, primarily the polysaccharides that protect their outer structure and their antioxidant powerhouse that continually fight off free radical damage,” said Stoeckel. “Understanding that the skin is equally subject to harsh environmental conditions, world-leading microalgae experts began studying the molecular structure of microalgae with a particular focus on its protective and regenerative abilities. It is this research that led to the discovery of two never-before-seen compounds — alguronic acid and then microalgae oil, which is clinically proven to keep skin hydrated more than five times longer than untreated skin over a 24-hour period. They are at the heart of Algenist’s formulations, including the new Reveal line.”

Reveal Apricot addresses dark, discolored skin with golden algae extracted from halidrys siliquosa algae from the Atlantic Ocean; Reveal Blue uses a blue microalgae — aphanizomenon flosaquae — that is harvested in the wild conditions of the Cascadia region in North America, and helps neutralize the appearance of sallow skin; Reveal Green is powered by a green microalgae, dunaliella salina, that has adapted to survive in extremely saline habitats and in seaside rock pools and is intended to neutralize the appearance of redness; and Reveal Pink is from the red algae chondrus crispus found in the ocean waters of Canada, Chile and Mexico, which is harvested by hand to allow specific selection of the species and preservation of the ecosystem. This red algae and pigments work in synergy to color correct and neutralize dull, tired-looking skin, said Stoeckel.
