HONG KONG — Rock Media, a new company cofounded by Bruce Rockowitz, chief executive officer of Global Brands Group, is gearing up to launch a new luxury lifestyle magazine with an e-commerce component early next year.
The company was set up in June and its first fruits will be unveiled with the launch of #Legend magazine’s Web site and e-commerce operations in February. A print issue of the monthly magazine will debut in March.
Rockowitz enlisted his younger brother Steve, a psychologist who had been managing several health-care businesses in the U.S., to be ceo of the new venture. The other cofounders and editorial team include veterans of the Asian luxury publishing industry such as from society magazines Prestige and Tatler.
“We created a media group called Rock Media and #Legend publishing is one of our companies. It’s a luxury lifestyle-focused magazine,” Steve Rockowitz said. “It’s not going to be a product. It’s going to be an experience. Our Web site is going to be very strongly video-based.”
Although he declined to go into specifics, he said the e-commerce component would launch simultaneously and sell all types of luxury products.
With a hashtag in its name, it’s clear that #Legend, will have a strong social media bent to it.
“We chose to include [hashtag] in the name because we are building strong social media and digital platforms,” said Vivienne Tang, the editor in chief of the new publication. “‘Legend’ stands for iconic people, places and objects, whereas the [hashtag] sign represents the modern and fast-forward nature of the industry.
“There will be a Hong Kong focus but with a global view. We will feature articles that play a role on an international level, and our readers in Asia will always be able to relate,” she added.
Their first cover will feature two big Hollywood stars, Steve Rockowitz said.
This appears to be just the first of many other media ventures for the firm. Tang said more editions of #Legend could be on the horizon and Rockowitz said there may be an opportunity to combine his expertise in health for Rock Media with his brother’s ownership of Pure Group, which operates a series of gyms, yoga studios, and sells fitness apparel and health-oriented food.
“My job beyond #Legend is to look for other avenues [for Rock Media], for example health and wellness,” he said. “Although his primary business is global brands, we think there’s a way to bring [that and Pure] together. Rock Media at some point might expand into entertainment or leverage health and wellness within media.”
