Sophie Cookson recently appeared in a series of short films for Gemfields in which she donned jewelry with Gemfields Mozambican rubies. The British actress, who starred in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” alongside Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Chris Hemsworth, just wrapped filming “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” with Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum and Halle Berry. WWD sat with Cookson to talk about her style, the Kingsman movie costumes and future projects.
WWD: Can you talk about “Kingsman: The Golden Circle?”
Sophie Cookson: No, Matthew Vaughn will murder me! But it is great, and the cast this time is just mind-blowing. I was just working with Michel Gavin the other day, who for me is just a complete legend. I have a Kingsman suit this time — which is about all I can say. That is so much fun. When in modern life do you ever get a suit made for you like that? I remember the first session we had, I was wearing what I thought was the finished suit. And it was like, “That is not right” and just ripping the arm off with such great force and thinking, “Oh, my god, you are ruining the suit,” but they know what they are doing, and it is great seeing masters like that.

WWD: In the first Kingsman film, did you have any favorite looks?
SC: Well, obviously the nightclub. That was a fun look to have, but just our Kingsman suits, all of our jumpsuits that we practice in. It is very cool, and I am all about that — cool and casual.
WWD: Did anything interesting happen while filming?
SC: There are always the days when the puppies come on set. That is always interesting, and hearing someone like Matthew Vaughn become a dog whisperer will remain with me for a very long time.
WWD: Can you tell us about filming the “Huntsman: Winter’s War?”
SC: Working with Chris [Hemsworth] is hilarious, nonstop. He’s been on the film for four months and is still sneaking around corners pretending to be a Ghostbuster or something. He’s got a heart of gold, and he always makes everyone around him smile.
WWD: Did you have any favorite looks?
SC: It was just cool. It is like, though, girl cool, with the armor and the hair braiding. And the costumes are so beautiful. You probably can’t see it, but the attention to detail is impeccable. I had this cool kind of rabbit stitched to my leather, and I think it is really special as an actor when you get to step into someone’s shoes and everything is incorporated. It just makes it so much easier.
WWD: How would you describe your style?
SC: I think, for me, the main thing is feeling comfortable. Tonight I’m in a jumpsuit, and I feel whenever I’ve worn trousers or a suit, it always makes me feel sexy but effortless and confident. I think that is the key; there is no point wearing something to an event that you just feel completely stifled by, and in life in general it is about having fun and playing and dressing up.
You’ve recently starred in the Gemfields short film. Is the ruby a favorite gemstone?
SC: My approach to jewelry has always been to keep it very simple, but if you want to wear something, make sure it is exquisite and lovely and will stand out. For me, getting to wear stuff like this is just my cup of tea. Like, the rings I wear in the film are just beautiful, and I think it is something you like to pass down. It is part of your story.
WWD: Can you tell us about other upcoming projects?
SC: I’ve also just wrapped something called “Ashes in the Snow,” with Bel Powley. Very, very different, set in the Forties, when the Russians came. So it is a very different kind of story. I am having a lot of fun at the moment. I am getting to do stuff like this, “Ashes” and “Kingsman,” It’s a really nice variety.
