STRICTLY ADULT: Nina Nitsche, who worked at the elbow of Martin Margiela for almost two decades, has joined Vetements, WWD has learned.
Demna Gvasalia, founder and creative director of Paris-based Vetements, confirmed her hire and said her title is collection director, in charge of the design team under his direction.
“Now it’s becoming adult,” teased Gvasalia, who founded Vetements in 2014 after a stint in the design studio at Louis Vuitton and a formative three-plus years at Maison Martin Margiela, where he was inculcated in a garment-focused approach toward design.
Gvasalia and his Vetements team design collections without references or themes, often dissecting actual garments and reassembling them, sketching them only after new volumes and proportions are created.
Georgian-born Gvasalia is also creative director at Balenciaga, which is scheduled to show its spring collection in Paris on Sunday.
