Designer Nick Graham is known for his sense of humor, so it should come as no surprise that he has teamed with Marvel, a company best known for superheroes such as Iron Man and Captain America.
For spring, to coincide with the nationwide release of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” on May 6, Graham is designing dress shirts, neckwear and sport shirts that discreetly incorporate the characters into the patterns. From a distance, the pieces look like classic designs, but the superheroes can be seen up close.
“Teaming up with Marvel is so cool,” Graham said. “It is such a dynamic brand that has unparalleled reach around the world. We’re taking a fresh approach in men’s wear to the Marvel brand, and extending it in ways that haven’t been done before.”
The first designs will be for “Iron Man” and “Captain America,” but future collections will include other characters.
The line will be sold in better department and specialty stores and will retail for $59.50 for neckwear and $69.50 for dress shirts.
Shirt patterns include ginghams and Hawaiian patterns with Iron Man and the Captain America shield embedded in the designs. Neckwear is classically designed on the front, but the superheroes are on the tips, a technique Graham described as “mullet designing — business in the front and party in the back.”
Graham said the collection is geared to “perennial Millennials,” and anyone who loves the Marvel brand.
Paul Gitter, senior vice president of licensing for Marvel at Disney Consumer Products, said, “Marvel is always looking for ways to connect with fans through their sense of individuality and style. We knew Nick Graham’s … voice in the men’s wear world would resonate and that his style was the right approach to offer fans a fashion-forward way to express their love for the Marvel brand.”
