Keanan Duffty has joined John Varvatos Enterprises Inc. as senior design director for the company’s Star USA line. He will report to John Varvatos, chairman and chief creative officer, who confirmed the appointment on Friday.
According to Duffty, he will oversee and manage all aspects of design for the Star line, a collection of leathers, graphic tees and denim that is sold at Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and other retailers, as well as online.
“My band played at the opening of the 315 Bowery store [the former CBGB’s nightclub], and I have long been an admirer of John’s artisanal aesthetic,” Duffty told WWD. “I look forward to building on the success of the Star USA brand and developing the collection’s strengths along with a very talented team of designers.”
The Britain-born Duffty graduated from Central Saint Martins in London with a bachelor of arts degree in fashion and is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He established his own fashion label in 1999, drawing inspiration from subversive style, underground music and British iconography. In 2007, he collaborated with David Bowie to create a men’s fashion collection for Target that was inspired by the musician. He has worked as a design director and guest designer with Aveda, Ben Sherman, Dr. Martens, Gola, Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B., Reebok and Moods of Norway, and was a contributing fashion editor at SOMA Magazine.
From 2012 to 2015, he was senior director of fashion merchandising at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He returned to New York in 2016.
In April, Lion Capital, which owns a majority stake in the John Varvatos business, also took a stake in Authentic Brands Group, whose brands include Hickey Freeman, Hart Schaffner Marx, Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali, among others.
