Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are partnering with George Zimmer’s new concept, zTailors, to provide customized alterations for customers who shop for men’s and women’s apparel online.

After several delays, Zimmer, the founder and ousted chairman of Men’s Wearhouse, has launched a national on-demand digital tailor network called zTailor that is currently being tested on the retailers’ Web sites in the Los Angeles area. The retailers are expected to roll out the program later this month to New York City, San Diego and San Francisco, as well as in Washington, Oregon and Florida. It will be expanded to additional markets this summer and be available nationwide by early fall. Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are the exclusive department store partners of zTailors.

The way the concept works is that when a customer purchases a garment online from Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s that needs alteration, he or she can click to request a pre-qualified tailor in their area. Once the garment is delivered, the tailor visits the customer’s home or office for a fitting and consultation and the completed garment is delivered to the customer within a week or less.
The charge, which varies depending upon the service, is similar to the rates for alterations that Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s charge in-store. If additional alterations are needed, that service is free of charge.

“With zTailors, our online customers can receive the same professional and personalized service they have come to expect from our stores,” said R.B. Harrison, Macy’s Inc. chief omnichannel officer. “For those customers who prefer to purchase online, this is a convenient way to look their best at a fraction of the cost of custom clothing.”

Zimmer, zTailors’ founder and chairman, said the platform “was built on the premise that well-tailored clothes should be accessible to everyone. With a nationwide network of skilled and experienced tailors, zTailors fills an unmet need in the marketplace, providing expert craftsmanship and excellent, personalized service to both men and women, so they can look their best and be their best.”

Independently of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, zTailors is currently available in over 50 markets in the U.S. and has amassed hundreds of tailors across the country.
