Marvin Ellison, the chairman and chief executive officer of J.C. Penney, will be one of the 2017 “Father of the Year” honorees. The event, which is in its 76th year, will take place on June 15 at the Hilton Hotel in New York.
“Mr. Ellison is an inspiration to our industry — a true visionary and leader who built himself from humble beginnings to become the ceo of such an iconic U.S. retailer,” said Dan Orwig, president and ceo of The Father’s Day/Mother’s Day Council, and group president of Itochu Prominent. “We are thrilled to recognize a man who is as dedicated to his career as he is to both his family and the betterment of our community’s youth.”
Ellison is a seasoned retail executive who has spent more than 30 years in the industry. Before joining J.C. Penney’s, he was the executive vice president of U.S. stores at Home Depot. Prior to that he spent 15 years at Target.
Ellison also serves on the board of directors at FedEx and the independent governing board at the University of Memphis, his alma mater where he earned a business administration degree in marketing. He received his master’s in business administration from Emory University.
The event will benefit Save the Children’s U.S. Programs. Since its inception, the National Father’s Day/Mother’s Day Council Inc. has donated more than $30 million to meaningful charities nationwide.
Last year, former Vice President Joe Biden and Jerry Storch, ceo of the Hudson’s Bay Co., were honored.
