Saks Fifth Avenue turned to Italy to select the winner of its fifth annual Fabric No. 1 Award. The award honors what the retailer believes to be the finest wool fabrics offered each season from the world’s top mills.
This year’s winner was Fratelli Tallia di Delfino, a mill from Biella, Italy, that was founded in 1903 and is well known for its suit cloth.
Tom Ott, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s wear for Saks, worked with a panel of men’s wear experts who evaluated a variety of submitted fabrics in terms of composition, construction, weight, hand-finishing, cosmetic, comfort and value.
The winning fabric will be used to created a limited number of ready-to-wear and made-to-measure suits for the store that will be available for purchase at the New York flagship and the Chevy Chase store in Maryland. Each will be identified by a custom number and label. They will retail for $1,895 and only 33 suits will be made.
Past winners of the No. 1 Award have included John Foster, Reid & Taylor, Vitale Barberis Canonico and Lanificio Fratelli.
