Titled “Stargazer,” Nicky Zimmermann’s fall collection offered prominent messages of opulent optimism and fantasy rooted in the designer’s love of astrology.
“There’s always been something so fun and intriguing to me about pop astrology and the idea that our personalities are influenced by our birth signs,” she said of the collection’s 12 key whimsical zodiac prints, which were created for the line by Scottish artist Anita Inverarity and splashed across Zimmermann’s myriad ready-to-wear.
Signature flounced frocks, puff-sleeved blouses and flirty skirts were emblazoned with prominent versions of Inverarity’s celestial illustrations and layered with matching printed leggings, bodysuits and catsuits, as well as weighty outerwear (cropped puffers, tailored topcoats, shearling coats with hand-crochet detailing), fall suiting, knubby knits and daywear separates. Kaleidoscope and collaged renditions followed suit — the effect was bold, but that was the point.
“The idea was that we wanted it to be eclectic, textural and fun with a clash of prints and fabrications,” Zimmermann explained at her New York showroom.
The collection’s strength shined through Zimmermann’s eye for detail, seen through the jewelry-like bead and intricate lace adorned hems, or crescent moon-shaped hardware, which served as belt buckles and zipper toggles. Monochromatic cocktail and evening looks pushed the zodiac theme further with refined restraint. For instance, painstaking handkerchief dresses with lace appliqués and bijoux buttons texturally layered atop tonal lace catsuits and leggings, or a beige mini with star-shaped “fringe.” The result balanced the brand’s signature feminine romance with ethereal fantasy — perfect for our transition into the Age of Aquarius.
