With his fall collection for Salvatore Ferragamo, creative director Massimiliano Giornetti effectively captured the values and images associated with the house. A nimble mix of classic luxury — defined by Ferragamo’s mastery in Italian leather and subtle equestrian flare — and tasteful modern edge, the lineup felt especially on point.

Giornetti introduced a suave bourgeois attitude from the start, opening with a brushed plaid blanket cape with leather trim and a stand-up collar over a gray skirt and slick, high-heel riding boots. Variations on the cape recurred throughout as did sleeveless coats in combinations of furs. No pants — skirts and dresses only — underscored the sophisticated mood, as did the murky palette of black and brown shot with bronze, green, orange and deep purple. Those rich colors kept Giornetti’s special effects, such as pleats traced with metallic treatments, brushstroke patterns and leopard spots, well within the orbit of elegance.
