So what were you thinking about this season? It’s a loaded question for someone like Scott Sternberg, who comes at his inherently boyish-preppy collection each season with a vast and always intriguing list of references.
For his fall women’s lineup, Lee Miller, Man Ray and Schiaparelli topped Sternberg’s list and the results were delightful. There was a rabbit-fur collared plaid jacket and matching slim pants, and floral dresses and rouched midiskirts that gave a nod to the Forties.
The designer also had some fun with trompe l’oeil, putting mock toggles on a PVC cape (and real ones on a shaggy fake-fur coat). “I liked the idea of mixing a bit of surrealism and romanticism but making it feel Band,” he noted. With the perfect dose of wit, none of it felt silly or overdone.
