John Patrick insisted that by designing and showing his fall collection “without the pressures of a runway show,” he could work toward the “perfection” he desires. In the lineup presented in his showroom, “elongating” was key, he explained, with simple tailored shirts in red, black, white or blue rendered just above the knee or floor length. Classic coats in camel or shaggy gray alpaca were beautifully cut and shown mid-calf over long or cropped pants. But it was the designer’s new “tuxedo look” — a svelte, tailored white blazer over a sleeveless gray wool turtleneck and full evening skirt with a wide ruffled hemline in gray silk — that looked freshest.
