Anthony Thomas Melillo is really into sweater-dressing, especially in the form of coordinating, matching sets. “I love the idea of the sets — I don’t know if it’s an old Italian thing or what,” he said with a laugh. Melillo gave his girl two versions for fall, done in wool and cashmere blends with contrast seaming and cuffs. He also packed the lineup with ATM’s greatest hits: a silk and velvet slipdress; micro-modal rib shirting and bodysuits; and the label’s best-selling hoodie, elevated here in luxe cashmere. New for fall was a series of a cool sweaters with raw, jagged hems.
Don’t expect much in the way of splashy design, because that’s not the name of the game here, which Melillo readily admits (although maybe a little more excitement couldn’t hurt). Overall, these are chic, comfortable clothes to live and travel in. To demonstrate, Melillo rolled one of his black, double-faced lightweight Neoprene coats into a ball, proving that it could be easily packed into a suitcase. Clearly, the formula is working: Melillo just opened his first permanent flagship on Bleecker Street in Manhattan.
