For fall, Dennis Basso is breaking some old-school fashion rules to create newness. “There are things I thought were so wrong and that now seem so right,” he quipped, speaking of a tough black ankle bootie he styled with a skirt with an unfinished handkerchief hem.
The look: A grounded uptown girl who still wants glamour, but will wear pieces more than once.
Quote of note: “Everyone is focused on athleisure dressing, but that isn’t me,” he said of his latest work, all of which he makes in New York. “Instead I went with a men’s wear direction, which lends itself to a relaxed feeling. I still feel that I have to be true to the brand and we are known for luxury and glamour.”
Standout pieces: Puffers with fur accents (his bestsellers every season); a pink plaid pants suit; multicolored fur vests; a fur bolero jacket over a car coat; maxidresses; fur-trimmed outerwear.
The takeaway: Basso may be the king of uptown, but it doesn’t mean his customer can’t have some fun and channel a bit of edge from below 14th Street, too.
