On Wednesday morning, Ralph Lauren showed his pre-fall collection via an intimate runway show at his women’s store on Madison Avenue. The salonlike setting proved perfect to highlight the impressive lightness of the clothes. “Very delicate, very sleek, very modern, with touches of detail,” Lauren said before the show. “It’s very subtle.”

Said subtlety came via the palette — gray, beige and greige, a message the designer underscored himself by sporting a gray suit for the occasion.

Lauren kept his silhouettes gentle and refined. Worked in gray silk knit, an off-shoulder poncho with shearling cuffs made for a chic top, while a slipdress was rendered in suede and lace. The lineup also included suede and lightweight jersey separates and dresses with lovely touches — a suede dress, for example, featured leather piping; silk skirts and dresses were tweaked to punctuate the garment’s fluidity.

The soft movement extended to evening, with highlights including a silver silk cashmere sweater over a languid satin skirt.
