Prabal Gurung approached his pre-fall collection from a pragmatic point of view. “I think of it as high summer because it delivers in May, June, July. So here is one girl that’s in the city and wants transitional cottons, and then there is another girl who already bought everything she needs but still wants to shop, so she is preparing for the fall,” Gurung explained. The collection navigated both territories flawlessly, for example, a cotton tunic with ruffled details at the sleeves, hem and waist was paired to a black lace pencil skirt. “You could wear this on its own with sandals during the summer, or dress it up,” he said. But nothing says transition like knitwear that can be layered and played with, and Gurung has made it a point to develop his highly sought-after sweaters. A long cardigan with perforations and contrasting panels gave a cozy touch to a lace-panel sheath. Meanwhile, for evening, appealing alternatives included a blue floral tuxedo, a leather fit-and-flare dress with braided detail, and most memorably, a tromp l’oeil layered dress in cranberry crepe over black lace.
