Mary Alice Haney was inspired by her pals after their annual girls’ trip this summer — a journey to Croatia and Venice. “Here we are on a girls’ trip, and you’d think we’d all be wearing sweatpants, but each of my friends would come out at night in these sexy, lounge-y outfits,” Haney said. “That got us all talking…and then I found these pictures of Elizabeth Taylor on vacation.”

Referencing black-and-white images of Taylor’s vintage vacation style — with her elegant head scarves, day dresses and off-the-shoulder tops — Haney channeled the glamorous woman off-duty in her pre-fall collection. Most pieces invoked a relaxed spirit, as in a striped, metallic Lurex metallic off-the-shoulder blouse with matching trousers, or a turquoise wrap gown with transparent blouson sleeves. Other languid separates, done in silk, featured Croatian flower-prints. It wouldn’t be a Haney collection without a few of the label’s signature sleeveless and one-shoulder bodycon gowns, this season updated with transparent camouflage-patterned lace cutouts and overlays. “If it doesn’t make your body look amazing, then it’s not a Haney,” the designer said.
