Julien David riffed on cruiser skateboard style and classic cruise style with ironic whimsy for resort, clashing skate gear with the clichés of yachting culture — peacoats, blazers, floral prints, cocktail dresses and nautical striped sweaters were tweaked with a fresh, street attitude and proportion play. David got literal, too — an actual cruiser skateboard will be produced in a collaboration with surf brand Quiksilver. The collection — all manufactured in Japan — was built around inventive Japanese fabrics, for example, a classic black leather perfecto jacket interpreted in a “Washi” bamboo paper material, or an ultralight cotton and linen denim on summer shirts and pants finished with sporty elastic waistbands. Pattern-wise, an excellent optical white scribble embroidery was applied on navy tulle cropped pants, a double-breasted jacket and a cropped T-shirt and “mutant daisies” motifs multiplied on a cotton and nylon denim devoré dress with slits, padded peplum jackets and skirt suits.
