It’s hard to argue with Protagonist’s minimally driven elevated basics — elegant tailoring, liquid slipdresses — jazzed up with measured details, such as the sneaky suggestiveness of a wide neckline on an oxford shirt. But lest the impossibly tasteful wander into clinical territory, design director Georgia Lazzaro gracefully woke up her first pre-collection for the label with intense color, such as sunburst orange, cobalt blue and dusty pink, among the core of black and white, and played with subtle sensuality and versatility. Some of the best pieces included a jacket/dress with a deep V-neck, which could be worn with the plunge in the back or the front; an ivory jacket beautifully cut in a modernist hourglass silhouette, and a black jacquard jacket and matching cigarette pants embroidered with stripes that incorporated all of the colors of the collection.
