Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard worked from the premise of an uptown Eighties party girl for the resort collection — something they can relate to, if only in their dreams. “She was wearing Oscar and Ungaro and was a Lady Who Lunched,” said Swanson Beard. “Dancing on tables. Good times. Good for her. Our inspirations were all the things we are not doing.”

They channeled that energy into a louche take on a burgundy velvet suit, a ruched polka dot skirt and leopard-printed goat fur jacket. The collection had a practical side too, with updates of the signature Veronica Beard dickies on a cable knit sweater with a detachable shirt collar and cuffs, satin puffer parkas that zipped off to become neat cropped jackets, and cashmere bodysuits that are also available as regular sweaters, since “not everyone gets” the bodysuit, said Miele Beard.

To that end, the designers are learning much more about their customer now that they’ve opened their first store on Madison Avenue, which is in temporary pop-up mode before it’s renovated later this summer.
