Having gained notoriety recently as the designer behind two of the dresses Michelle Obama wore at the Democratic National Convention, Laura Smalls showed a collection that balanced her sexy sensibility with a more restrained, ladylike (First Lady-like, perhaps?) feel with a touch of whimsy. A cream silk sundress had a leopard-print insert in back, while the front of the sheath was done in red-and-white candy stripes, its back in solid black. Cotton poplin day looks were charming in white, orange and black color blocks, particularly the spliced bustier and pencil skirt and the swing dress with a cutout top.
