From the arresting digital backdrop that swirled with images of goldfish, anchors and carousel horses – courtesy of artist Mat Maitland – to the ponchos, trench coats and bomber jackets in optical prints, the Hunter Original collection telegraphed a quirky sense of fun.

Creative director Alasdhair Willis talked about “the spirit of invention” and “a British take on summer,” as being among the collection’s touchstones.

Rubber outerwear abounded, and the optical pattern he worked onto outerwear was inspired by the “dazzle camouflage” print used on British naval ships during World War One.

Accessories also had an eccentric air: Models wore rubber platform sneakers and Hunter-logoed slip-on sandals paired with nubby socks, and toted miniature rubber doctor bags finished with chunky treads.
