Matthew Williamson’s spring show took its cue from David Bailey’s images of Marie Helvin in full south Pacific splendor.
The designer’s aim was to evoke lush, exotic summer and he did so with light silks, floral lace, embellished suede and a Balinese hibiscus motif that came as a print or picked out in embroidery or sequins.
Fluid, printed silk dresses came with long billowy sleeves, or skinny straps, while languid karate-like suits were embroidered with flowers.
The color palette was inspired by summer days and nights, as in one sky blue suede skirt with a frill at the front, paired with a draped and cropped yellow blouse. Diaphanous evening dresses — many of them halter-necks – came in sunset hues of peacock blue or rosy orange.
