Bibhu Mohapatra looked to writer and political activist Nancy Cunard as inspiration for his spring collection. But instead of reproducing Cunard’s Jazz Age look literally, the designer tried to capture her independent spirit — a smart way to update this brand’s elegant style. The show opened with a series of charming daywear dresses and separates, like a miniskirt in a black-and-white jacquard fabric with matching top, and chic, fitted shift dresses made of a precious leather and silk cloth handwoven in Laos. Eveningwear had the same fresh, modern vibe, like a flowing asymmetric column dress in a multicolored basket-weave pattern.
